This one will be interesting to watch for me. From the brief description it reminds me of a similar incident with an FB-111 at Pease AFB in the 70s. The crew was court martialed and ultimately found not guilty.

I used to live about 5 miles to the north of Ellsworth and often those aircraft took off and landed right over my house. Noisy but I did not mind.

I hope the crew does not get used as scapegoats.
