As a 26H I was trained to troubleshoot, repair and replace down to component level any electrical item. In other words If I found a bad cap on a card I could remove and replace it. I could manufacture parts if needed and we did. If it was electrical as a 26H I could fix it.

I technically held 3 different MOSs throughout my career; 11B, 96H/35G (the MOS was-re-number3d) and 35M. 96H school was 6 months long and 35M school was 4 1/2 months long. And neither of them taught me anywhere close to everything I needed to know. I was at a severe disadvantage - and was a liability to the unit - every time I re-classified. Now, I worked my butt off and quickly got myself up to speed. But not everyone has my capacity or drive to do so. And I would never have done the second re-class except that they phased out my old MOS.
ONE lateral move, early in a career is sustainable. Anything more than that needs to be the exception, not the rule.otherwise we are sacrificing too much technical expertise.
