The career of the cruiser USS Vincennes (CG-49), which lasted from 1985 to 2005, was overshadowed by one single event: the tragic shooting down of Iran Air Flight 655 over the Persian Gulf on July 3, 1988. Although that event is undeniably part of the Vincennes's story, this video seeks to tell the history of the ship from beginning to end, including her historical context, the reasons she was built, and her career before and after the disaster. As interesting as it is, she can never quite get out from under the shadow of that tragic event that defined her.
