On this day in 1941, a hero is born. Did anyone really expect Walter “Joe” Marm to become a war hero? His father once tried to teach him boxing, but the younger Marm wasn’t interested. A degree in business administration from Duquesne University was more his speed—at least at first.

Marm and I attended the dedication of Philadelphia's Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Penn's Landing in 1987. He impressed me as being a very down-to-earth guy. . . .
