Issue is that history whitewashed Columbus as a benevolent explorer when he was out for conquest. While the natives were fighting an inter-tribal war and practiced slavery, Columbus followed them in terms of atrocities and all of them were nearly wiped out after his actions.

I have a degree in history, and I never once in college back in the 1980's ever learned that Columbus was a benevolent explorer. Explorer yes, looking for a new route to the far east for the spice trade yes.

No, it's about ensuring history is properly remembered. Mount Vernon still exists as memorial for Washington. They also emphasize that Washington was a slave owner and do not attempt to whitewash the facts.

Ok, he was a slave owner, he also laid the ground work, along with many others, to end slavery.
