During my tour (1965-1968) I met a number of locals. I made a point of hanging out at the German places rather than the GI hustle bars. Almost every German man I met of the age to have served in the German military during the war claimed they served on the Russian front, were never a Nazi, and knew nothing of what had happened during the war. Except one. He finished the war as a Lt Col in the Luftwaffe. He admitted to flying at Normandy during the D-Day invasion. However, he stayed with the common excuse; "I was only following orders."
Most of the youngers folks I met did not want to even talk about the war. National guilt I guess.
