I think most opposition to the Anthem is the difficulty in singing it. Not many performers can do it properly.

So were Washington, Jefferson, and just about any of the southern founders. Even some of the northern ones had slaves or indentured servants. We can't judge people because of the norms of the society they lived in. Also contextually the verse in question is best understood as referring to the mercenaries under hire, and perhaps the former slaves the British promised emancipation to if they fought against their former masters. We also need to be careful to not interpret their words by modern meanings. As one who has often struggled to parse what our founders have written, I know this only too well.
