Comedian Sara Silverman recently joined forces with bestselling authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey against two unlikely adversaries: ChatGPT’s creator OpenAI and Meta Platforms. META, -1.80%
The authors filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in early July in which they claim their copyrighted books were used without their permission as part of training dataset for ChatGPT and similar AI models.
The outcome of this unfolding drama could be more than a simple courtroom win or loss; it could fundamentally redefine the boundaries of artificial intelligence and copyright law.

Question: Would they have a lawsuit if their books were used in a class to teach English to non-English speaking students?
If the books were properly obtained, I see no lawsuit.
This appears to be a frivolous lawsuit. Next will be a "must use as" which means that I can no longer balance my kitchen table by placing Sarah's book under one of the legs.
I forecast that she and others can not win or we will all be in trouble since a win will mean that all things would be subject to acceptable use laws.
A bible could only be used for religious purposes and could not be used for nonreligious literature purposes.
Sports books could not be used in math or probability courses.
The list goes on. What I use a book for, is my business. As long as I do not violate the copyright.
Google would have to destroy all the digitized books.
Libraries would have to police each book to be sure that it is being "READ" properly.
Courts would have to distinguish what constitutes a book and determine if the law was broken or not and what punishment would be appropriate for breaking the law.
Would this apply Worldwide? Or just in the US. And what if the law was broken in a foreign country?
