My favorite film of all time is "The Longest Day", especially the first half of that movie dealing with the run-up to the D-Day invasion. That portion of the film dealt with Allied and German preparations for D-Day and focused a lot on the intelligence aspects of that timeframe. A great deal of that film is historically accurate, and as a former intelligence soldier and officer, I find it fascinating. It amazed me that the Germans had unambiguous warning of the invasion based on the compromised BBC radio broadcast of the excerpt of Verlaine's poem ("The long sobs of the violins of autumn, wound my heart with a monotonous languor..") and yet they still fell victim to the element of surprise. This spoke volumns about the success of Operation Bodyguard, the deception operation that convinced the Germans that the "real" invasion would fall on the Pas-de-Calais, the sector occupied by the German 15th Army and the section of the English Channel nearest to England. Great film, incredible story.
