If all works, and they have found the "sweet spot", then I can kind of see where they are going. Congress will love it because it's fewer troops. Marines will hate it, because they will have a variety of roles to learn. DOD needs to get their stuff together to provide all weather lingering munitions, so the budget probably won't take too much of a hit, it will just be shifted to technology instead of man power, which is where things are headed anyway.

I think Berger's vision of the Marine Corps is nuts. He wants to relegate a force of around 170,000 to small unit tactics to protect the ships. He eschews amphibious landings and large kinetic operations. Who will pick up the slack, the Army?

If we get into a large war or a world war the Marine Corps has said it wants to stick to small unit actions. Does the Army fight it out alone? Do the Marines borrow Army tanks?
