I always thought that fees for VA disability claims from outside entities should be treated with the same protections for Social Security claims. The Social Security Administration limits attorney fees to 25% of your back pay, up to $7,200—whichever is lower.

Why not the same for VA claims, especially since there are so many VSOs that will assist with your initial claim for free.

I would not say they charge hefty fees, they are a fee for service but only if you are awarded benefits. They helped me after years of working with the VA
