The wanna-be super powers continue to build, while the U.S. government continues to shrink our force capability.
I agree that quality is important, and we should be investing in the newest forms of technology that will enhance our war-fighting capability. I also agree with the quantity of the force. Do we need a 600 ship Navy similar to the Reagan years? Probably not, but Sailors can't gain sea dominance while sitting on the shores of San Diego, Norfolk, Everett, or Pearl Harbor or Yokosuka.
I'm also of the opinion, that future wars will be primarily "missile" engagements. You can fire them from a distance and cause significant damage to infrastructure. We don't need battle ships or millions of infantry like the Chinese. We need the ability to gain air and sea superiority so that our missiles can fly unobstructed.
Bottom Line, I do believe we are the most powerful military in the world, and that status hasn't come without cost. We need to ensure, the sacrifices made by those in the past, will not be in vain. We need Strength in Numbers!
