From what I understand of history bans were only in a few select towns and only applied while you were in said town. Not only that, the way the Sheriff or Marshal enforced those laws would be prosecuted for police brutality in today's society.

I can foresee many tragedies brought about by all the untrained people carrying firearms.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen At least that one is harmless. If I have to be there anyway, there is no harm in making me pay. Silly, but not harmful.

And yes, there are a tone of senseless laws, I will totally agree. My favorite - and it may be urban legend, not truth, because I have not personally verified the law - I can't remember where, but in one of the states it is illegal to carry a weapon longer than 6 feet concealed. How do you conceal a 6 foot weapon on your person?

MAJ Byron Oyler I strongly suspect the clerk misinterpreted a straw buyer laws preventing someone buying a gun for someone else (or was trained by someone who misinterpreted). But, while it was silly, I just complied and moved on with life. Not a hill worth dying on - especially as I didn't have purchase in hand, yet!

SFC Casey O'Mally Sounds like something from Colonial days when weapons were close to that long.

"Common Sense Gun Control" in the so-called Old West was simple enough -- if you supported the town sheriff you could carry a gun, if you were a stranger or one of "those people" you couldn't.
