I have an ignoble story about the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Mark Noah who is a private US citizen discussed his thoughts on finding MIAs at Tarawa. The head of the agency responded by treating him like shit and was very hostile. It is quite unfathomable to think someone who is on your side should be treated like he was. It reminds me of government bureaucrats who think they know everything. In due time Mr. Noah has helped the agency find between 100 to 200 MIA Marines. This is off the top of my head. It was a tremendous vindication for an American who wanted to find MIAs to repatriate them.
