The overdose-reversing drug Narcan could soon be available to buy over the counter without a prescription, the Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday.
The FDA's approval of the nasal spray Narcan — the brand name for the drug naloxone — means the medication could be more widely available across the U.S. as the country continues to grapple with an opioid epidemic.
"Today's action paves the way for the life-saving medication to reverse an opioid overdose to be sold directly to consumers in places like drug stores, convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations, as well as online," the FDA said in a statement.

Indeed it is remarkable how it quickly reverses severe respiratory arrest. Its critics suggest it enables and does not prevent substance addiction.

Considering tens of thousands are overdosing from fentanyl in part due to a wide open southern border this is a good thing as Fentanyl and fentanyl analogues (some stronger than fentanyl, some weaker) are not “naloxone or Narcan resistant.” They are opioids and will respond to naloxone if someone is overdosing. However while many will befit from Narcan many will in fact be user of illegal drugs.
So now the message is don't do drugs, but we're not going to do anything to curb the flow of drugs nor enforce the laws that prohibit illegal drugs use and or distribution. In fact we are going to make it easier for you to abuse drugs by making Narcan more assessable. Enjoy while the big pharma gets rich off your self destruction.
As well this does not address the cause only the affect much like gun control measures.
Drugs are illegal just like guns and killing way more people but no one is saying there needs to be more drug control measures as illegal drugs are already "banned". Very perplexed as hundreds of thousands of people are still doing illegal drugs and are still dying. How is this possible their all banned?
I predict once guns are banned in the US guns will pour over the southern border just like the drugs. However when that happens criminals will rule and turn the unban inner cities into real shit holes filled will drugs and guns and human trafficking and yes way more violence as gangs will compete for control. No one will want to be a cop (due to defund and DA's) or they will all be corrupt and citizens (really only the super rich will only be able to afford) will be forced to hire private security. And yes the private security will be allowed to have guns. This will only further marginalizing low income individuals by increasing their chances of being a victims of a violent crime. So sure why not make Narcan over the counter. What could go wrong? Hey about on gun violence we sale over the counter vest - you know for the kids that should fix the problem.

Narcan only works for narcotics. Respiratory depression from benzodiazepines and various other drugs etc are not reversed. Duration of action for narcan is 60 to 90 minuets and depending on amount of narcotics or duration of action of narcotic used people can re narcotize. People reversed need to be observed, probably in an ER with pulse oximetry monitoring. Narcan can cause extreme discomfort in some one who has not taken a narcotic.
