Are Russian tanks poorly designed?

BLUF: Russian tanks were good for 20th century Cold War, but not 21st century war in Ukraine.

While exposed ammunition is a weakness, Soviet Union thought lower body profile, cheap cost and easy access to railroad could compensate.
