Until recently in Japan, women bought chocolate for men on Valentines Day in February. Men would reciprocate on a separate holiday in March called White Day.

Change comes even to societies that honor cultural practices. I lived there in 1973 and 1974, I don't remember this practice...at least, no one gave me chocolates
