The Royal Marines are one of the oldest and most storied units in British military history. But while they go back to the 17th Century (in a way, at least!) they really only became ROYAL in 1802, during the Napoleonic Wars! What made the Marines so important to receive this distinction? What role were they fulfilling in Nelson's Navy, and how did they go about this duty?
