Very bizarre scenario. Negligent discharges are always the result of not following the guidelines of firearm handling.
The only loaded weapon in my vehicle is either on me or in my lockbox. Rifles and shotguns are unloaded and cased. When I take them out of the case, the barrel is pointed in a safe direction and the breech is checked to make sure there is no round there.
I’m still tryin to understand how the dog fired the weapon though. But,I guess the paw could have. Really freaky negligent discharge!

I clear my weapon when I grab it. I clear it before I put it in the vehicle...I clear it when I touch it again...I clear it whe I take it out of the holster and put it in the safe...wash rinse repeat. This guy had no responsibility carrying.

one quick example. My daughter when she was old enought to hunt used my father in laws lever action .30-.30. The safety was a slight pull back from hammer down position or if you put a round in the chamber it was a hold the hammer, trigger release and slowly put to the safety position. I had always taught her to pooint muzzle downrange just in case of any inadvertant firing. Well, I loaded it for her and was doing the hammer release and my thumb slipped off and it fired, downrange of course, but it fired anyway...scared the $#!+ out of me...so we empited the rest of the rounds, put it back inthe safe and haven't touched it for years now...I went three days later and bought her a 6.5Creedmoor bolt action and she is absolutely deadly with it and it is much safe. We both were reminded of a valauble lesson that day. SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY!
