When I enlisted in 1982, the Army was still enlisting Category IV-A and IV-B recruits. Those that could not deal with the academic side got sent to BSEP, especially those with English as a second language problems, and the those overweight/APFT failures got sent to a remedial boot camp. That didn't save everyone, but my impression of both programs was that it salvaged a lot of soldiers that would have been IET failures.
I feel that we lose a lot of enlistees because we pushed the entry standards too high, and a lot of new soldiers because we are so quick to put people out with "adjustment disorder".
