MOST police officers make an effort to "serve and protect," and certainly desrve support in all respects. That said, the police certainly seem to have issues with who and what kind of officers they are recruiting, or accepting. The probationary period needs to be stringently followed to weed out the bad actors.
I recently read where an officer recently ran into serious issues - excessive force, etc. Yet, during his academy training, the staff actually made issue of his approach to critical situations and his response which was to, "shoot first, then evaluate." It's far too critical of a job where split second decisions can either save lives, or ruin lives.
Here in PA, we have many, many part time police departments and officers. It's a bane to effective police work although it "can" be an effective means to evaluate someone for a full time position. Still, the negatives certainly outweight the good and I wish part time officers would be abolished.
