Many years ago, I was part of an Old West reenactment group in El Paso, and we occasionally talked about how nice it would be to have someone portray Bass Reeves. We don’t know positively that he ever spent time in El Paso, but we also don’t know that he didn’t. Chances are he came through here, especially if he ever went into Mexico on his quest for bad guys. Besides, our group did “historical and hysterical reenactments,” so we occasionally interpreted certain legends as if they held more truth than they actually did. Unfortunately, the one thing we could not get past was that there were no Black Old West reenactors in the nearby area at the time, and there was no way we could get away with playing *that* fast and loose with history.
