If you have caller ID they normally show up as a voice or unknown number, not the agency they're supposed to be, another sign to look for.

This is particularly true of the IRS. They do not call. I have had a number of people who fell for scam that they owe the IRS. They also don't accept payment in prepaid cards. Had a fellow vet come into buy them thinking he owed the IRS money. Finally, after over 10 minutes, convinced him it was a scam
