High winds are common with seasonal changes and cold weather. Winter weather is prime time for this. Pressure Gradient Force (PGF) with winds cascading southward and through Mountain Passes and elevation of course. Jet streams will shoot colder or hotter temperatures in whatever direction the Long Wave troughs and ridges.
In Furnace Creek (Death Valley) will be showing highs being around 120-122 degrees afternoon and for the next several days. Then as rain moves in, temperatures can fall 30-40 degrees. Bullhead City, AZ had highs in the Low 70s. New Mexico is generally milder, and the source region does matter.
There are so many variables including a shift in the orientation of those jet streams as one example.
