Today, Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA), released the following statement on the passing of First Sergeant Wallace Green Jr., a Virginia Beach resident, Montford Point Marine, and Congressional Gold Medal recipient who served in the Marine Corps for 22 years:
“First Sergeant Green was a pillar of our military community in Hampton Roads, and I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. A Montford Point Marine, 1st Sgt. Green became one of the first Black Marines in the country, putting his life on the line during a time of immense racial strife, division, and war. He served in Korea and Vietnam and retired from the Marine Corps in 1968 after 22 years of distinguished service to the United States. 1st Sgt. Green continued to give back and serve our community long after retirement as a Norfolk Public School teacher for 21 years and as a bible-school teacher for his church.
“1st Sgt. Green is an American hero. His selflessness, perseverance, and commitment to serving others will continue to inspire generations across the country. The United States and Coastal Virginia are better off because of 1st Sgt. Green, and we will miss him dearly. I am keeping his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
