One example of our History that no Americans can be proud of in hindsight is the treatment of the indigenous peoples. Even among the indigenous people when they fought against each other things like this happened.
However, looking at it from a perspective of the times to the conqueror go the spoils. Humans have always treated other humans very poorly after a war, its not an excuse, just a fact.
