This really is simple and absolutely something she and I could agree on here. Not to use NG resources, but to push for a Federal solution of more secure border, implementing faster resolution for deportations, force asylum seekers to use the country of origin to make their plea (or one of the ones they traverse to get to the US), and updating the asylum laws to be more specific and/or less prone to being taken advantage of. While she's at it, end the sanctuary city status, and quit ignoring the problems we've been articulating in border states for decades.
This has nothing to do with some made up perception of prejudice, or similar anti-immigrant rhetoric. I want people to come here, and I don't care what nationality, race, gender, religion they hail from. Come here legally, be a productive member of this country, and add your culture into our own (not a separate pocket... blend in). If some are just here to make new segregated communities of their former point of origin, live on welfare, be unproductive to this country, and/or to articulate their hatred of the US, why would we want those people here? There's nothing wrong with having standards for legal entry and compassion for those in dire need. But we cannot take everyone in, nor should we try. I don't think we're doing enough abroad in Latin America to help these regions prosper and this is a damn shame. But if we take all the people who want a "better life" who's left behind to build it there instead?
What I see from the Democrat leadership and their claims for compassion is either BS or they simply aren't paying attention to the harm they do to these people by ignoring the insecure border and our outdated immigration policies. Out of sight, out of mind... Many of these people have to pay traffickers large sums long after they get here. They are place in gangs, raped, abused, and essentially enslaved. The DC Mayor up until now hasn't had to really face what a sanctuary city can become when their city becomes a focus of where these people are sent. Until now. So now she wants the NG to take them in? And do what? I'm sorry but they need to be processed and deported, not released. I see this as nothing but a means to overwhelm the system enough to get the other side to concede, grant amnesty, and build a bigger Democrat base as they go on to claim they did that. The thing is, within the Latino community at least, this might backfire. More and more Latin Americans in the US are recognizing the democratic base is imploding with far too many outlandish positions, definitions, and strange rhetoric.
Now one could say what am I complaining about then if I think they all might move to the right. But that misses the point. I don't care what base I could potentially get them to follow, I care about this country moving into an unsustainable position in which we cannot recover from. It is very much the same thing the Mayor of DC is facing now. She claims to be a champion for the illegal immigrant by supporting the Democrat neglect of the border, sanctuary city status, and poor immigration laws. But that's all because in the past, it wasn't affecting her city so much like it's starting to do now. It's ok, when all the problems are not affecting her city so much. Well, now they are, and she wants a Federal response. How about we agree that it's a problem and agree we as a country address the areas I identified and which you ignored on a Federal level?
I commend my Governor for loading these buses up and sending part of our problem to DC to help them understand it better. I didn't originally think it would amount to much, but apparently it is having an effect. This isn't to say the GOP leadership response has been great. Like I said, we've done a less than ideal job abroad in helping our neighbors to the south and that's on all of us. But in my experience in these countries, noting the policies and the actions we've taken in various nations, the Democrat leaders have been the least helpful (my observations since President Carter, who was the worst for this region compared to any other president since).
I'll end with one disclosure. While I am not of Latino descent, I spent a better part of my life living in Latin American countries. I spoke Spanish fluently and I have a broad base of friends and even family members who originated from Latin America. I went to American schools which on average consisted of roughly 40% American (some with Latin American heritages), 40% from the host nation, and the rest international (to include from other Latin American nations). The point is, before anyone wants to even attempt to call me bigoted or anti-immigrant, I am ready to shut you down. I love the Latin American community as I have embraced much of its culture through the years. But it doesn't stop there with that part of the world, and I can speak to that if necessary. This country simply needs to get a better handle on who's coming in, and who's staying here illegally. The alternative makes no sense, it's out of control, and it's absolutely unsustainable. Achieving more of that control will also in turn enable us to increase the numbers of immigrants as needed.
