I think adjusting expectations is key. I just recently flew out of Orlando and people were flipping out that we were delayed due to weather. A rather intense thunderstorm rolled through and crews had to clear the tarmac due to lightning.
While it seemed like a reasonable safety concern a large number of passengers flipped out instantly with the first announcement that there was going to be a delay. As the delays continued the cops were called in to protect the staff at the gate. It was just unhinged aggression towards the airline and staff.
