Marines halt use of new amphibious vehicle at sea after mishaps off California coast

The U.S. Marine Corps will keep its new amphibious combat vehicle — a kind of seafaring tank — out of the water while it investigates why two of the vehicles ran into trouble off Southern California’s coast this week amid high surf, military officials said Wednesday.
No Marines or sailors were injured when one of the vehicles rolled onto its side Tuesday in waves that were unusually high because of a storm in the southern hemisphere. The other one became disabled when waves as high as 8-feet slammed the coastline.
The mishaps prompted troops to leap out of the vehicles and make their way to shore at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego. The mishaps were first reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The new vehicles were introduced to replace Vietnam War-era amphibious assault vehicles, one of which was involved in one of Marine Corps’ deadliest training accidents of its kind two years ago off Southern California’s coast.

It's a tragedy for these Marine so lose their lives. Training accidents happen much too often. These old amphibious vehicles can sink quickly in heavy swells. I was at Camp Pendleton red Beach back in the summer of 2017 helping to evaluate a logistics Brigade from the Army Reserve.
I observed Marine Corps LCAT and I even saw a couple army ships that are landing craft types. I never knew the Army had a Navy!

LTC (Join to see) I remember a Few Trips to San Clemente Island. Great Weapons Range during Calm Water which is Most times, Now During Rough Seas? Don't think I'd want to get into any Landing Craft!

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel -Did a training exercise on San Clemente Island back in the day. The only wildlife we found were scorpions.

LTC (Join to see) - hard to say, we only found them when I kicked over a stone, they like hiding under them. This was back in the 70's so the population could be 0 to thousands by now.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel I read that article. To error on the side of caution in this instance is understandable. Fortunately the Corps learned from the last time this happened.
