Homicide is a top cause of maternal death in the United States
Evaluation of death certificates from national database paints grim picture for pregnant women."
A friend has been posting a daily meme, lately, on FB about homicide of pregnant women. The first comment she posted was a man who had asked his wife if she thought suicide in pregnant women would increase. The wife's response was "yes" and more husbands or boyfriend would be committing homicide. He was chilled to the bone, said it was nothing he had ever imagined happens.
Then this Nature.com article came to my attention, yesterday.
It presents the issue in somewhat different terms. However, homicide of pregnant women and post partum women, could be new information to many. Because of how those deaths are categorized and reported, it also raises questions about some crib deaths, imho.
"Pregnant women in the United States die by homicide more often than they die of pregnancy-related causes — and they’re frequently killed by a partner, according to a study published last month in Obstetrics & Gynecology1. Researchers revealed this grim statistic by using death certificates to compare homicides and pregnancy-related deaths across the entire country for the first time."
Nature tends to be a fairly respectable publication of new research in all the sciences.
