Such a sad chapter in our nation's history.
Category: Finally. Better late than never.
The issue may be more of a priority in some places than others, depending on where one lives. It is a big deal in NM. There is also a cemetery of children in Albuquerque connected to the earlier days of the church run local boarding school. It is adjacent to what is now the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.
Canada has made more progress working with the Indigenous community. I have a Canadian friend who wrote a book about her experiences in the boarding school as a young child. She suffered immensely in self destructive ways as a young adult from the traumas of the boarding school. Then she chose to learn her tribal language, religion, traditions, customs - and is now a respected tribal elder who teaches all the same to the youth.
I have the impression that boarding schools, in modern times have become much different, having been acquainted with folks who have attended them. Even so the negative effects of trauma from those earlier times remains evident on the rez.
