So I'm thinking about the new Armata, it also uses an autoloader with an unmanned turret. I suspect it will have the same design flaw as the older Russian tanks with autoloaders. I suppose the crew may be more likely to survive in the Armata due to the separate crew compartment but a tank without a turret isn't going to be very combat effective.

Just some quick thoughts. When I was a tank commander in an M1 my vantage point was around 11 feet in the air. It gave me good visibility and 360 awareness. My question is how does the Russian tank commander in the Armata get his situational awareness? It would be foolish if he does not have optics at a the top of the tank. Even if he had the proper optics his situational awareness is degraded. As a tank commander I had to give minute driving instructions because the driver was only a few feet from the ground. He could not see well if it is not a flat terrain. Same goes for the gunner. If he can only see from the near ground level, he is missing out on situational awareness.

MAJ Ken Landgren That's a great point and one that I (and perhaps most non tankers) never really thought about. I always knew in buttoned up tanks visibility is an issue but now they are also reducing the visibility of the commander when the tank isn't buttoned up too.

SPC Kevin Ford - It was hell buttoned up because I had to look through thick prisms, and I could see very little, but I could see what the gunner was seeing. The gunner has optics at the very height of the tanks. He can see with thermal or natural colors.
