Back in 1974 when I was deciding between enlisting in the Air Force or Navy, I sat in a room full of guys for follow-up testing after our ASVABs. We came to a time when we were told that 3 people’s scores qualified them to test for sonar. He then read off 2 names. “Who’s the third?” “Doesn’t matter. She can’t serve in a submarine.” It was me. “I still want to be tested,” I demanded. “You can’t fill the job!” Now the guys were insisting I test, too. Headphones on… 3 tests scored… one test aced… Mine. You see, I graduated from high school as a Music Major. Which tone is different, higher or lower? Hahaha Walk in the park. But 1974. You Go, Navy Women!! I walked out the door that day and joined the US Air Force.
