Being the fire brigade is an honor but it is demanding. Deploying downrange for several months on contingency deployments is tough on soldiers and their families. The 82nd Airborne is a terrific unit, but is not suited to fight heavy armor for a long time. I believe we need to have a heavy Corps back in Europe to better deter Putin. The notion we can do that mission by rotating a brigade out of Fort Hood now and then is wishful thinking.

I fondly remember USAREUR when we had two fully-manned heavy Corps (V and VII) with two ACR's (2nd and 11th), four fully-manned heavy divisions, two full sets of Corps Artillery, several attack aviation brigades, the whole bit. That was a formidable force, and we looked forward to knocking the CRAP out of the first two Russian Armies they might have tried to throw against us. If we had even half of what we had then available now, I doubt this would have happened.

Thanks for the share MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D.. Hard to believe that this was only a 90 day deployment. Should have been a minimum of 6 months for land based units and to also have a plan to rotate out and replace the carrier strike group. But then that might have already been the plan but keeping opens info close to the chest in this chess game with Putin.
