An Army Combat Engineer's Story of the D-Day Invasion

Wife’s Uncle was a LTJG assistant skipper LCT589 during the first wave @ Omaha. Years later he wrote a brief narrative about his experience on 06JUN. Still hugest chills reading it. Most of the other boats released at their designated locations with disastrous results due to the high seas. His skipper made the call to get in as close as possible. Amazing heroics that day.

My dad hit Omaha beach in the 4th wave as a PFC at end of the day he was made a leader of a makeshift squad. Only spoke one time about it, and he had a faraway state as if he was back on that beach. And all he said was they were a great bunch of guys. Of course he was into his 5th 7&7 of the day. And I was only 13 and it was the 30th anniversary 1974. He passed two years later. My Uncle Wally was a soldier who was part of D-Day. He never talked about it until I got drafted. Don't know if he ever talked about it again. He told me that the sky was black with planes, the ocean red with blood and you couldn't hit the beach without stepping on a body
