On this day 100 years ago, USS Langley, the navy's first aircraft carrier was commissioned. Jupiter was the first turbo-electric drive ship in the US Navy and the ship's conversion to an aircraft carrier authorized on 11 July 1919, she proceeded to Hampton Roads, Va., on 12 December where she was decommissioned on 24 March 1920. Converted into the first U.S. aircraft carrier at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Va. Renamed Langley on 21 April 1920; she was reclassified as CV-1, and recommissioned on 20 March 1922, Cmdr. Kenneth Whiting in command.
