Back in the '70's soldiers from 1ID(Fwd) had to travel from Augsburg to Gablingen to guard the place, because apparently ASA couldn't manage to guard themselves.

Also in the 70's someone decided to most a chunk of ASA to Sheridan Kaserne in Augsburg, under the Air Force. That was interesting for the soldiers in 1ID(Fwd) because all the barracks buildings were already full but that didn't matter and the Division had to turn over several buildings for the new unit. We had to juggle units around and had to start using the attics of old WWI buildings to house our troops.

1ID(Fwd) spent their entire building maintenance budget on just the buildings they were giving up (leaving zero funds to maintain the buildings we were living in) because the buildings needed to be "up to standard" before being transferred to the Air Force.

Came time for the buildings to be transferred and the Air Force sent one officer to sign for the buildings and a couple of civilians who turned out to be contractors. The Air Force had assumed that NO building coming from the Army could ever be good enough so without ever inspecting the buildings the Air Force had already set a contract to have each of the buildings completely gutted and rebuilt... entirely new floors, new interior walls, new electrical wiring, new plumbing, everything. Over the next few months the contractors ripped out all the brand new fixtures that 1ID had paid for, threw everything in the trash and redid everything "the Air Force way." On weekends we'd pick through their trash to get the lights and plumbing fixtures they had torn out so we could use them to repair our old stuff.
