Hacked websites and broadcasts are hardly something I would commend from Anonymous unless it were coordinated with a larger Information Warfare plan. All they do is react to something they deem is bad, without any appreciation into digging into the whole story/context/result. Sometimes they go after someone/something good, sometimes they don't. It's also not exactly too difficult to do what they do either. Someone below asked if they are able to hack Russia's defense systems and I would say that depends. It's not as simple as some make things on TV. First, what Russian defense network? Command and Control? Communications? Missile Defense? Air/Space Control/Defense? Their equivalent to our own secret and top secret networks? The list goes on and most likely these networks are stand alone and/or highly encrypted traversing multiple transportation paths.
So, with regards to Anonymous:
Do they have insiders to any of these networks? Doubt it.
Do they know ALL of the paths some of their encrypted tunnels could be routed through (if tunneling through commercial lines that is)? Unlikely.
Would they even know what to do to create a useful effect? Doubt it.
Anonymous, from what I've seen, is hardly a near-peer capable cyber-attack capability compared to US Gov capabilities. While they appear to be cool for temporarily taking down a website pushing propaganda, they really aren't. Before one decides to support them, they should consider the following not so heroic actions:
-They support Wiki Leak's release of leaked classified information in which they were booted from several hosting/services venues (whom they subsequently attacked)
- They attacked the NY Stock Exchange in support of Occupy Wall Street
- They have attacked other US government sites, including the FBI
- They attacked Sony for attempting to close Play Station 3 vulnerabilities enabling cheaters to cheat
- They've attacked Israeli sites promising to "wipe Israel off the map of the Internet" which is reminiscent to what Iran has said about the country itself
- They led a campaign against the City of Ferguson and Officer Wilson, who was cleared by a grand jury and the DOJ for defending himself from an attack by Michael Brown. They did so without any knowledge as to what happened and likely impeded an ongoing investigation.
- They attacked the Canadian government after Canada passed a new law granting certain anti-terrorism powers to the Canadian Intelligence agencies
While there are some seemingly positive campaigns they've led, I would still argue they are not accomplishing much and possibly even making things worse.
Anyone can appreciate their campaign against Russia at this time, but publicly commending them only emboldens them to do more. Are you sure you completely subscribe to their positions and values? The way I look at it is, ok, they took down some Russian sites and broadcasts. Sucks for Russia... Moving on.
