Geography is the largest reson Putin invaded, given the natural resources Ukraine has. And with them moving to a more free market and applying to become part of the EU trading block and then getting more favored nation status, would cut into his income and his oligarchs income also.

Good point. One reason why Putin seized Crimea was its position to the Black Sea for trade and aquatic terrain for Russian trade and security.
