I feel like perhaps you didn't even read the article. Just in the first paragraph is about a guy who worked in toxic environments. Jobs with no sick pay, barely any paid time off, having to work while sick, etc.
People are tired of working for toxic employers who don't care about them and work them into the ground with little to no benefits.
No one wants "higher wages for substandard work." People want to be able to have a livable wage. The minimum wage hasn't kept up with the times and hasn't been a livable wage in like 50 years.
Our society is messed up. We spend 65 years killing ourselves at jobs and for what? Maybe 20 years to enjoy life? It's depressing. Other societies don't function like this and guess what? People in those places are happier and more successful.
