That time Jimmy Carter saved Canada from nuclear destruction

On December 12, 1952, the National Research Experimental (NRX) Reactor at Chalk River Laboratories in Ontario, Canada, experienced mechanical problems and operator error that led to overheating fuel rods and significant damage to the NRX reactor core. It was the world's first nuclear reactor accident. Admiral Rickover father of the US nuclear navy took advantage of the clean-up operation to train his men in the field. One of those young officers involved in the effort was then-US Navy Lt. Jimmy Carter, a submarine-qualified nuclear engineer who in 1977 became the 39th president of the United States (and in 2002 a Nobel Peace Prize laureate).
