MCPO Hilary Kunz - I got out more than 45 years ago. I ended up at Ft Greely, and was there when the pipeline was started. A small log cabin with a dirt floor and no heat was rented for $150 a month, and you had two others paying the same. No utilities or anything else included. From the condition of those cabins, they dated back to at least WWII, and probably cost less than $200 to throw together. Like Ft. Rucker there were no other places to move to.

SPC Michael Terrell Long Beach was the same. Little box duplexes for E-5 to E-6, even tinier freestanding “substandard housing”, for E-4, but it was all they had to offer us, and for a Sailor living in the LA area, you took what you could get. The house only had windows on one side, no AC, but it was a house.

MCPO Hilary Kunz - Yhe on base at Grely was a little run down, but livable from what I heard. I spent my entire time living in barracks.
