Safia was Afghanistan's 2nd female military pilot before we allowed the country to be overrun by the Taliban. I briefly met her peer and Afghanistan's 1st female pilot, Niloofar Rahmani, watching her graduate pilot training in 2013. It was a great moment, celebrated by the US and Afghans alike. It's unfortunate neither will get to continue serving their country.

Both parts of that, thanks to the United States. We opened the doors to allow them to become pilots and then we let the door get shut again.

And ironically, it was advancing Afghan air power /capability in which we failed them, while leaving them to fend for themselves. Since we began the GWOT in 2001 through the next 20 years, we (US/NATO combined) facilitated almost all air operations, with only a few anecdotal missions facilitated by the AAF. The sudden lack of air support for the ANA after they had trained and depended on it since their inception ultimately lead to an easy advance by the Taliban.

1SG Russell Scott - I'm sure. But just like the last time civilians got folks out of Afghanistan, the current administration will eventually try to claim some credit. "Well, we let them land at our airport" or some such bullshit.
