This is even deeper than depicted. There are cases where reporting income is appropriate. Having said that they cannot go after our paycheck but that of our spouses.
If our spouses do not claim income properly, if they evade certain taxes by taking advantage of VAT etc. they subject themselves to scrutiny, all to often to the ire of a neighborhood friend or German coworker that they boast to. Bottom line is that, many like this gentleman may be being attacked wrongfully, but I assure you there are many more who do violate the rules associated with service overseas, and not just in Germany.
Anyway sone should always follow the laws of the SOFa agreement and the spouse must remember that as long as they are a citizen SOFA does not override the laws of their country.
