For more years than we would normally count, we, as a species have been searching the skies for evidence of life beyond Earth... Our level of technology has been growing exponentially to the point where we have the Hubble Space Telescope, and soon to be launched this month, the James Webb Space Telescope, which has the technology to monitor the mid-infrared spectrum of electromagnetism... Note below the information from C&EN Chemical Engineering News
"The new telescope will carry three mid-infrared instruments. Small molecules like water, methane, and carbon dioxide have vibrational modes that absorb mid-infrared light. Scientists will look for their signatures in the atmospheres of planets circling distant stars to see if those exoplanets could support life. They will also scan the ice and dust clouds in protoplanetary disks—the objects that form around young stars and eventually become planetary systems—to try to learn about the molecules that hang around in those systems and whether they differ from what we find in our own, mature planetary system." - C&EN Chemical Engineering News
We are on the brink of Solar and Planetary discovery never before envisioned... We are in an exciting scientific discovery time and if we don't annihilate our species and our world, first!
I hope you enjoy this science presentation!
