In the rehabilitation hospital his bunk was next to a farm kid from Kansas who had lost use of an arm, they had been wounded on adjoining mountain slopes at nearly the same time. They became very close friends over the course of a year or so, the kid's name was Bob Dole. Those two were a big part of the bi-partisanship that once was alive and well in the Senate. I saw an article about this a while back.

Living in Hawaii from 1999 to 2019 and being a state commander, region commander and national staff officer of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, I got to know the senator very well before he died. He was incredibly humble, hard-working and approachable. He is greatly missed in Hawaii.

One of these days we will get back to that kind of bi-partisan cooperation and civility. They're called 'The Greatest Generation' for a good reason. We should strive to emulate that!
