Omicron: Covid variant may already be in US, says Fauci

The new Omicron variant of coronavirus may already be in the US after spreading from South Africa, Dr Anthony Fauci has said.

The chief White House medical adviser told NBC’s Today programme on Saturday that he “would not be surprised” if the emerging Covid mutation had reached America via plane travel.

“We have not detected it yet, but when you have a virus that is showing this degree of transmissibility, and you’re already having travel-related cases in Israel and Belgium and other places, it almost invariably is ultimately going to go all over,” he said

PO1 Jeff Chandler I get tired of all the anti vaxers excuses. The vaccine provides protection for the majority of humans to avoid hospitalization if they get Covid, it's not perfect but no other vaccination is either. It also prevents the emergence of new mutations but what do we get from people like you? Read your first sentence, no actually read your whole post. Care about your fellow humans and get vaccinated!

PO1 Jeff Chandler Yes it is, so wear a mask if you choose to not be vaccinated, but most of those who make that choice won't do that either.

Except that Omicron has as many as 30 mutations just to the spike protein. The spike protein is what the current vaccines focus on - that level of mutation makes the current vaccines fairly ineffective against Omicron.
