Don’t forget the rich continuum leading all the way back to the Continental Army. 1776 was a tough year for Washington. Perhaps our army was 4000 in number, too small for offensive operations against a much larger British force. They had not won a battle that year and Washington’s main strategy was avoiding the British.
The Continental Army kept shrinking as confidence of winning the war was waning. Many of the enlistments were finished at the end of the year. Washington addressed the small army and beseeched them to keep fighting. 3000 remained. I think a relevant facet of the 3000 is they wanted to fight. They did not want to quit.
That December Washington crossed the Delaware River to win at Trenton and Princeton. Some of the soldiers died in the winter conditions and blood littered the snow due to lack of footwear for some soldiers. We were on the edge of defeat until we won those two battles. Then Americans had more confidence and enlisted and the army became bigger and stronger.
Those hallowed sacrifices and fighting acumen can not be forgotten, and everyone of us are part of that continuum going back several wars, eras, and centuries. Be cognizant you are part of something greater than yourself, but you are still an important link in the continuum.
Apologize for the mistakes. I typed on the phone.
