I for one, see no reason they can't. Ever since my childhood days in my grandfather's basement (early to mid 1950's) learning what he taught me about radios and other things, electric/electronic I've believed it can done. In the mid 1960s when the original Star Trek transporter was beaming folks down to the surface, I was seeing power transported down too.

Thank You Chip! This is a photo of he and I taken back in 1982.

He was my "Mr. Wizard" - James W. Burr [7/16/1902 - 1/11/1986]
He had an opportunity be in on the ground-floor of commercial radio but had to pass it by, family obligations etc. His career was with Ford Motor Company solving quality control problems. His basement looked like a scaled-down version of Menlo Park. He loved all things science and math. Living in Michigan, I had the opportunity to go to hunting camp with him too... A truly idealistic childhood for me.
