On September 20, 1777, at the Battle of Paoli, British forces under Major General Charles Grey attacked Brigadier General Anthony Wayne's encampment. The Americans claimed the British gave no quarter. It led to the engagement becoming known as the "Paoli Massacre". An excerpt from the article:

While only 53 Americans perished in the nighttime British surprise attack, Patriot propagandists were able to vilify the tactics employed by the British, who cut men down with bayonets."

Yes, DARPA is busily working on a way to conduct a war where no one on either side is ever killed, injured, or inconvenienced. Such a system is considered essential to avoid offending anyone.
